In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Nevada plans to conduct an all-mail election for the June 9, 2020, primary election. As a result, all active registered voters in Nevada will be mailed an absentee ballot for the primary election. Here are some answers to some common questions about the vote by mail primary.
When is the deadline to vote by mail?
All ballots must be postmarked by June 9, 2020, and received by June 16, 2020, to be counted. Nevada elections officials say it may take up to 10 days to finalize the results of the vote-by-mail primary election.
Do I need to submit an absentee ballot request application?
No action or steps, such as submitting an absentee ballot request application, will be required by individual voters to receive a ballot in the mail for the June 9, 2020, primary election. Voters will be able to mark their ballot at home and then return it by mail using a postage-prepaid envelope or by dropping it off in person at a designated county location.
What if I need to update my voter registration?
May 21, 2020, is the last day to register or update your registration online and still receive an absentee ballot for the Primary Election. To register or update your information, visit the Nevada Secretary of State’s website. From May 22 through June 4, 2020, voters may still register or update their registration online, but they will have to appear in person and provide a current and valid Nevada driver’s license or identification card and proof of residency to vote.
Can I vote in person?
All voters are encouraged to submit their ballot through the mail, as a limited number of polling locations will be open. However, each county will provide a drop-off location that will also offer in-person voting, updates to registration, and same-day registration during Early Voting from May 23-June 5, 2020, and on Election Day, June 9, 2020. According to the Surgeon General, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization, there is no evidence the coronavirus is spread through the mail.
