State of Nevada: In his state of the state address, Governor Brian Sandoval pointed out strides Nevada has made since 2011 as he revealed a proposed $8.1 billion biennial budget with new spending for education, workforce development, state parks and veterans. He also cited the state’s “momentum” in economic development, noting the 204 companies recruited to Nevada, bringing $14.5 billion in capital investment and 38,000 jobs since 2011. Read more.
City of Reno: In her state of the city address, Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve touted the city’s blight rehabilitation effort, starting with the demolition of two vacant motels. She mentioned neighborhood, graffiti cleanup and the redevelopment of Reno’s downtown area, including the hip 3rd Street Flats and the opening of national retailer West Elm in the US Post Office building. Northern Nevada: The Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN) presented a favorable picture for Northern Nevada, projecting some 51,000 new jobs from 2015 to 2019. Mike Kazmierski, EDAWN President & CEO spoke of the challenges to be met such as infrastructure, housing and labor deficiencies due to the influx of high profile projects to our community like Apple’s data center, Tesla’s gigafactory and Switch’s SUPERNAP data center.
