There are a number of upcoming events in the Truckee/Tahoe area with Dickson “connections” that you won’t want to miss. From song to dance, there is something for everyone. First up is the Inner Rhythms Dance Centre fundraiser, “Dancing with the Sierra Stars”, a takeoff of the popular television show starring local celebs, including our very own Kane Schaller. Dancers will take to the floor Saturday night, April 18th at the Olympic Valley lodge, exhibiting dance styles ranging from swing to disco, salsa to tango. Doors open at 6pm and show time is at 7pm at the Olympic Valley Lodge in Squaw Valley. Tickets are $75 per person and include light bites, desserts and a complimentary beverage. They can be purchased at Inner Rhythms, 12047 Donner Pass Rd, Suite B7, in Truckee, at the door or online. Inner Rhythms is a local non-profit whose mission is to promote cultural enhancement and build awareness for the arts in the North Tahoe/Northern Nevada region through education, performance excellence and a unique, collaborative alliance between dance and other performing and media arts. This will be a fun evening and not one to miss!
Next up on the calendar is the Truckee Community Chorus spring concert, “The Many Moods of Music” on Saturday April 25th at 7:00 pm on Sunday April 26th at 2:00pm. Under the direction of Susan Horst, they will be joined once again by The Diablo Valley Symphonic Orchestra as well as cast members from the Truckee Community Theater’s production of “The King and I” and the Truckee Tahoe Youth Chorus. Music will range from Bach’s Cantata 140 to Danny Boy and of course, songs from “The King and I”. The shows will be held at the Truckee Community Arts Center, 10046 Church Street in Truckee. All tickets are reserved seating and can be purchased online via their website. Adult admission is $20; children 18 and under are $5. Seating is limited so get your tickets early. As the calendar page turns to May, the Truckee High School Drama Club presents their annual spring musical over the course of the first three weekends of the month. These talented teens, under the direction of the extraordinary Peggy Boelk, will be presenting “West Side Story” for lucky local audiences. This timeless love story features all the songs you love, “Tonight”, “I Feel Pretty” and more, with some energetic dance numbers and colorful costumes. This production features a number of Drama Club members who recently returned from the Lenaea High School Theater Festival in Folsom with a number of gold and silver medals from the competition among over 50 northern California high schools. Dickson agent, Barb Wilkinson, produces the Drama Club productions and her daughter, Savannah, will be playing Anita in the shows. Shows are Friday and Saturday nights at 7pm and Sundays at 2pm. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students, and are on sale now at the Truckee Community Center, at 8924 Donner Pass Road in Truckee. Proceeds from the shows go towards club activities like the theater festival and an annual trip to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival to see world class actors at the height of their craft.
In June, the Truckee Community Theater in partnership with TDRPD and The Truckee Tahoe Community Chorus will feature over 80 children and adults in what is sure to be an absolutely amazing performance of the musical “The King and I”. You’ll enjoy one of the most memorable stories of all time, as the King of Siam, played by our own resident thespian, Kane Schaller, locks horns with a bright, independent Englishwoman with ideas of her own on the best way to teach children and interact with foreign diplomats. Based on a true story, “The King and I” has a gorgeous score composed by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, and includes classic songs like “Getting to Know You” and “Whistle a Happy Tune”.
In addition to The King and I musical, there are two preshows, “Sound of Music” and “Mary Poppins”, performed by local children. TCT is dedicated to providing theatrical training, both onstage and behind the scenes, to residents of all ages through plays, workshops, camps and classes. Tickets for the shows are on sale now online and are $25 for adults and $20 for children. The shows will be held at the Community Arts Center, 10046 Church Street, in Truckee.
