With the seasons changing, it’s time to look at the November calendar of events in Reno. From turkey trots to acclaimed Broadway shows to fabulous galas that raise money for the organizations that make Northern Nevada a wonderful place to live, there’s an event for everyone this month.

‘HAMILTON’

It has won Tony®, Grammy®, and Olivier Awards, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and an unprecedented special citation from the Kennedy Center Honors.
Apsara DiQuinzio on New Time: Art and Feminism in the 20th Century

Apsara DiQuinzio, the senior curator of contemporary art at the Nevada Museum of Art, discusses New Time: Art and Feminism in the 20th Century. Organized and on view at the Berkeley Art Museum, New Time presents a kaleidoscopic view of contemporary feminist artistic practices of the last 20 years. This landmark exhibition is international, intergenerational, and gender-inclusive in its scope, highlighting a diverse roster of emerging and established artists who have shaped the trajectory of contemporary art. Apsara DiQuinzio joined the Nevada Museum of Art in November 2021 as the new Senior Curator of Contemporary Art. This talk will be hosted virtually via Zoom.
Life Drawing: Open Studio

Virtual Educator Evening: Las Vegas Artist Justin Favela on Creating Inclusive Spaces

Join the Nevada Museum of Art in November for a conversation with artist Justin Favela. Based in Las Vegas, Favela is known for his large-scale installations and sculptures that manifest his interactions with American pop culture and the Latinx experience. As a multidisciplinary artist, Favela explores his own identity while exploring notions of authenticity and place using familiar and accessible materials to make large-scale installations, sculptures, and paintings.
Justin Favela has exhibited his work both internationally and across the United States. He is the recipient of the 2018 Alan Turing LGTBIQ Award for International Artist. Favela hosts two culture-oriented podcasts, “Latinos Who Lunch” and “The Art People Podcast.” He holds a BFA in fine art from UNLV.
This program is hosted virtually on Zoom and is always free and open to all PreK-12 educators in Nevada. Educator Evening is a free professional development series hosted almost every month (excluding January and July), offering state-approved professional development hours for participation.

Seasons affect the way we perceive our dwelling places. Fall’s changing hues are perfect for exploring moods that can be serene or vibrant, which each of these paintings suggests– either hushed hues or bold color applications. Participants in this class will receive one-on-one creative guidance to paint their own 16″ x 20″ canvas masterpiece in a fun, social environment. This class is perfect for all levels of artistic talent. Karen Hayes will teach the classes.

Textile Marbling on Scarves

In this two-day workshop, students will create their own marbled designs on three different silk scarves. The class will offer opportunities to practice patterns and color combinations that work well for marbled silk scarves during the first day. Students will have ample practice time to experiment and develop their vision in the standard marbling tray before moving on to the large scarf tray. On day two, they will prepare two 20” x 72” trays for the silk. Students will take turns on these trays to execute each scarf with the assistance of the instructor.

Sonic Borders

Experimental composer, sonic architect, performance artist, and visual media artist Guillermo Galindo joins the Nevada Museum of Art to talk about his work Sonic Borders. Galindo’s work shows moments of disruption on the land and introduces a complicated look at policing the boundary.
Galindo’s acoustic compositions include major chamber and solo works, two symphonies commissioned by the UNAM (Mexico university symphony orchestra), the Oakland Symphony Orchestra and choir, and two operas.
Galindo is a Senior Adjunct Professor at California College of the Arts, Stanford’s 2018 Mohr Visiting artist, and the 2019 Thomas P. Johnson Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the Rollins Cornell Arts Museum.
Laptop Lecture: Introduction to Lightroom

Seniors are invited to spend the afternoon at the museum. Enjoy a guided tour and a studio art class. Monthly tours and projects are designed for participants of all experience levels and offer an engaging and interactive experience. These monthly sessions are held on the second Friday of each month. Watercolor Techniques: Batik Method on Rice Paper

Take watercolors to the next level with this fun method of using the batik method of applying hot wax to save and build layers of color. Participants will create a painting on rice paper, which adds an extra element of interest and texture. An instructor will guide students through the batik process while assisting each student with color mixing, composition, and values to create a focal point in their work. The instructor will provide a fairly simple drawing for students to use, but students are also free to bring a reference image to draw out on their own. A working knowledge of watercolor painting is preferred; this class is not for absolute beginners to the medium.
Needle Felted Animals And Ornaments

This class is a perfect introduction to the world of needle felting, which is the art of sculpting wool with a specially designed barbed needle. Stabbing the wool repeatedly creates a textile object. Needle-felting is an ideal craft in that it is easy to learn, requires minimal supplies, and can be completed anywhere.

3rd Thursday is back with good food, cold drinks, live entertainment, crafts, chef demos, movies on the big screen, and art in Downtown Sparks. The Sparks Museum and Cultural Center, 39 North Downtown, Sierra Arts Foundation, and the City of Sparks have created a downtown experience with art surrounding the Sparks Arts Walk, including music, poetry reading, performances, art tours with food, and kids activities. Come downtown to enjoy the museum, train, and historical schoolhouse.

Jurassic Quest®

Holiday Family Arts Festival

Arts for All Nevada’s Annual Holiday Family Art Festival returns at the Lake Mansion Arts & Cultural Center and promises a safe, socially distanced festival. The event will include creative art stations, ornament making, a free book for every child, and a visit with Santa Claus. The free festival takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and families with children with special needs are invited to attend starting at 9:30 a.m. An adult must accompany children at all times. Face masks are required to participate in the festival.
Trees and Lights Gala

The Trees and Lights Gala is Safe Embrace’s largest fundraiser, held annually on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. The event is anything but somber—it is a delightful black-tie fundraising event that is the perfect way to kick off the holiday season. Attendees will enter the Gala via a red carpet and participate in a cocktail hour surrounded by beautifully decorated Christmas trees and wreaths. All the trees and wreaths will be auctioned off during the event and then delivered to the highest bidder’s home the following week.
23rd Annual Scheels Turkey Trot

Before settling in for a day of feasting and football, head to the Scheels Turkey Trot for a large serving of healthy family fun. Participants can choose the timed 10K run or a two-mile un-timed walk or run around the Sparks Marina. The 10K, which equates to a little more than six miles, uses city streets and the local bike path. Both the 10K and the two-mile events will start and finish in the parking lot of Scheels.
Wobble Before You Gobble 10K/5K

Start Thanksgiving with a run/walk/wobble through downtown Reno! The 5K run begins at 9 a.m. near City Plaza. Participants will make their way through downtown Reno, circle within Idlewild Park, and then head back to City Plaza, where they will get a finisher’s medal upon completion. Art Angels Holiday Workshop
