Musica Sierra presents New Vintage Baroque, an adventurous historical instrument ensemble dedicated to the creation of 21st century music. Berkeley-based keyboard, vocalist and composer Majel Connery, Canadian violinist Edwin Huizinga and Pennsylvanian bassoonist Ben Matus take you on a first-person sonic experience of the Sierra Valley landscape in a premiere performance. This popular marbling workshop will introduce students to marbling techniques on fabric that can be used for covering books and boxes. The main focus will be on marbling fabric to create book cloth, and techniques for other textile uses will also be discussed. At the end of the day, the instructor will demonstrate how to prepare pieces of marbled cloth for use in bookbinding. Students will leave with their own stack of 15 marbled fabric pieces. All materials are provided with registration. Class is for adults 15 and older.

Watercolor Techniques: Batik Method on Rice Paper

Take your watercolors to the next level with this method of using the batik method of applying hot wax to save and build layers of color. The instructor will guide students through the batik process, while assisting each student with color mixing, composition and values to create a focal point in their work. A working knowledge of watercolor painting is preferred; this class is not for absolute beginners to the medium. Ages 15 and older only.
Supplies: Black Micron Pen or other waterproof fine-line pen, watercolor brushes, flats or rounds watercolor paints of your choice, watercolor palette of your choice.
Introduction to Landscape Photography

Students new to landscape photography or those looking to sharpen their skills will enjoy this introductory level course. The first two days of class will be spent in the classroom exploring camera gear and functions along with the tips and tricks to create dynamic landscape images. Students will review composition techniques along with shooting in different times of day. The final class will meet offsite to shoot in the field during the transition from the golden hour to twilight where students will apply the techniques learned to create their own artistic vision. Ages 15 and older.
Supply list: A DSLR or mirrorless camera, as well as their camera’s manual and any lenses that students own should also be brought to class. A fully charged battery and memory card are also necessary for class. Please also bring a tripod and shutter release cable.
Create a Book: Birds in Nevada

During the course of this 4-part class, students will study the diverse birds of Nevada and use different art techniques (acrylic, watercolors, colored pencil) to contribute to an informative book. After learning about different birds in Nevada, students will pick a favorite bird to study and illustrate. Students will also be guided through the creative process to write a narrative poem to accompany their artwork. The end result will be a rich and colorful alphabet book of Nevada birds combining the art and poetry of all class participants. The book will be printed and published shortly after the end of the class. Every student will receive a copy. Recommended ages: 6-12. Face coverings are required.

From Sheep to Yarn

This class will explore the origins of yarn. Taking raw wool freshly sheared from local sheep, students will wash it, card it, spin it into yarn and dye it.
