Dickson Realty has been selected as the exclusive listing broker for The Residence Club at Nakoma, a golf resort community near Graeagle, Calif. in Plumas County. The Residence Club at Nakoma is an equity residence club providing members shared ownership of fully furnished Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired residences within the Nakoma resort community.
The Schomac Group Inc., a real-estate development and investment company based out of Tucson, Ariz. that purchased the Nakoma development in 2010, partnered with Dickson Realty to assist in selling membership interests in 12 vacation villas within the development. Schomac has plans to build an additional 48 villas with construction set to begin in spring/summer 2015. There are three versions of existing villas – a studio that is 775 square-feet, a one bedroom that is 964 square feet, and a two bedroom that is 1,356 square-feet. The development also has 80 single-family homes with potential for an additional 300-plus homes.
The Nakoma resort community includes The Dragon, an 18-hole championship golf course designed by Robin Nelson with a 23,000 square-foot Clubhouse designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Wright conceived the architectural concept for the Nakoma Clubhouse in 1923 at the age 57 upon the request of the Nakoma Country Club in Madison, Wisc. Wright’s design included a geometric roofline composed of teepee like towers of wood and copper rising from walls clad in stone, his characteristically low-ceilinged entrances and passageways that led to soaring spaces including the 60 foot-high “Wigwam Room” with its towering, four-sided central fireplace. The structure never came to fruition until the original owners of the Nakoma development purchased the plan from Wright’s Taliesin architects and opened the Nakoma Golf Resort in 2000.
To accompany the Clubhouse, the luxury villas at Nakoma were designed by Taliesin-trained architects Martin Newland and Elisabeth Winnen. They echo the structural elements of the clubhouse – octagonal form, pitched roofs and sculptural stone fireplaces – without mimicking it. The villas are located along the 10th fairway of the Dragon golf course and are available in studio, one and two-bedroom units.
In addition to the golf course, clubhouse, villas and homes, the Nakoma development also features a spa, fine and casual dining, bocce ball, hiking and cycling trails and nearby accommodations for mountain biking, horseback riding, kayaking, fishing, snow skiing and snowshoeing.
The Schomac Group Inc. is currently in the process of building a lodge within Nakoma that will feature 42 guest rooms. They are also developing a two-story, two-tenant building that will include a grocery store and a café/coffee bistro on the bottom floor and four apartment units on the top floor. The lodge and two-tenant building are scheduled to open in summer 2015. Also as part of this effort, Schomac will be breaking ground on an activity center that will include tennis and sport courts.
Phase 2 of the development, currently in design, includes a 12,000 square-foot recreation center that will feature a swimming pool, fire pit, climbing wall, fitness center, media room, children center and teen center. The anticipated groundbreaking for this project will be in 2015, with the goal of opening in 2016.
