Enjoy a day on the slopes and benefit the local educational foundation at the same time?  Sounds like a win-win!  You can do just that with the 2015 Skiing for Schools dates just announced by the Tahoe Truckee Excellence in Education Foundation.

Throughout the season, various North Lake Tahoe ski resorts will provide hefty discounts on day lift tickets, with the money going to support the programs of Excellence in Ed. Participating resorts include Homewood, Tahoe Donner, Sugar Bowl, Tahoe Cross Country, Northstar, Royal Gorge, Tahoe Donner Cross Country, Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows.  You’ll get bargain rates such as downhill ski tickets for just $40, and cross-country tickets for only $15 for most of the dates. Over the past 25 years the Excellence in Education Foundation has provided over $2.7 million in grants to classes and programs at our local schools. Just last year, they provided over $300,000 in grants. Teachers and schools compete for grants based on merit, with awards going to those classrooms and programs where they can provide the most hands on assistance to kids.

Executive Director Laura Brown says that grants fund items such as books, science equipment, and musical instruments.  Many of the grants go to items that are just not available through the usual school budget, due to budget constraints.  All grants are reviewed by a site administrator and a school site council of local citizens, educators and students, who rank the grants.  Recently, the foundation funded teacher requested grants in categories such Math & Science, Technology, Literacy, History & Social Science, Life Skills and Physical Education.  As a foundation, Ex in Ed recently partnered with the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District to provide Chrome books to every student between 8-12th grade, enhancing the use of technology in the classroom for all the students.

As with the Foundation’s Dining for Schools and Golfing for Schools cards, Skiing for Schools is possible because of the generosity of the local business community and the public who buys those tickets. It provides skiers with the opportunity to have some fun at great prices, while giving back. So, enjoy!
